I nearly fell for this scam, believing it was genuinely my electricity provider reaching out. They had quite a bit of my personal information, and the caller had a proper British accent to boot. But the moment they started talking about renewing a ‘business’ supply account and wanted to verify my password and bank details, alarm bells rang loud and clear! I don't even have a business account for my electricity! It seems like someone’s compromised SSE's data.

Received a call claiming to be affiliated with British Gas, presumably from UCL, seeking to discuss new rates for my electricity renewal.

They promised to help me cut costs on my business electricity expenses. However, I’ve just received my new contract and it’s twice the amount I used to pay!

Steer clear of them!

Fascinating development! They dialled my business line, which is a VoIP number I utilise specifically for certain purposes. The caller pretended to be affiliated with EDF Energy, insisting that I had to renew my contract. However, EDF has no record of this number whatsoever. It seems they might be rummaging through the electricity supply database and pairing it with business data gleaned from sites like Yelp or possibly Google Maps. I suspect their aim was to mislead me into engaging them as my energy supply broker. It was an automated cold call, and the caller seemed a tad irked with my response. Can’t quite fathom why!
