When I expressed my doubts regarding the legitimacy of the call, they directed me to the "Tax Credits: General Enquiries" section on their website and subsequently rang me from the actual HMRC number, "0345 300 3900", as displayed on the site (again, I foolishly answered). To my astonishment, I was informed that my taxes from 2016 to 2020 had undergone a re-evaluation, and I supposedly owe HMRC "£4598.75". Despite my persistent worries and my intention to ring the official HMRC number myself, they insisted that "there's no need to call back, as the matter has been escalated to the courthouse and I ought to seek legal counsel." Currently, I'm in the midst of reporting this phishing attempt to HMRC. I’m left wondering if they can disguise the number like they did with me without having the original 0114 number to begin with, or if they managed to glean any further sinister details when I unwittingly accepted the "HMRC" call. The level of nuance in this scheme is quite concerning, to say the least. Fingers crossed that no further information was captured, and I can chalk this up to a brief lapse in judgement!

Complete con! Just have a laugh with it, let them prattle away, then give them a piece of your mind. It really gets their goat!

When they inquired about my identity and my solicitor's name, I firmly stated that I wouldn’t provide any information until they clarified the purpose of the call. Turns out, they claimed it was the HMRC planning to take me to court over alleged unpaid debts. I told them I don’t have any dues with HMRC, and just like that, the line went dead.
