Received a call from this number on Monday, but they hung up before I could pick up the phone. Out of curiosity, I checked the Who Called Me website and learned it’s linked to some dodgy banking scam, potentially involving PayPal. The majority of comments were quite negative. Interestingly, I also received a text about a week ago claiming that my PayPal account had been frozen due to some suspicious activity, which is quite puzzling since I don’t even have a PayPal account. Clearly, this number is part of a scam.

So, I joined this tv contest and just as they rang to say I was in and had won a little extra prize, my phone ran out of juice. Over the past week, this number has rung me more than ten times but not once did they bother to leave a voicemail. I read somewhere that this number and another with a 0161 prefix are linked. A couple of weeks ago, I picked up a call from a 0161 number, but they hung up straight away - I blocked it afterwards since it was flagged as a scam. Around that same time, £200 disappeared from my bank account without authorisation, and shortly after, there was another attempt to swipe £700, which luckily my bank stopped. Seriously, don’t pick up, just block and report this number.

This number rang my old mum, claiming she’d won a prize in a contest but missed out on the main jackpot. Then they asked for a tiny fee of just £1.92 for postage on some “goody box” filled with lottery tickets, books, and games. My mum did enter an ITV competition recently for a £12,500 prize, so it seemed believable at first. Luckily, she refused to share her bank info and said she’d only pay via PayPal, which made them drop the call. Definitely a scam - don’t get caught out by it. Proper awful people.

I decided to have a bit of fun and claimed that I was part of a fraud investigation team. The moment I said that, he hung up on me! The trick is to keep them chatting without bringing up anything to do with finances or account details. Just keep them on the hook: go '123' before pretending to sneeze and say, 'Hold on, let me grab my card.' Then, hit them with questions like, 'What’s your name? Where do you live?' When they respond, just nonchalantly declare that you’ve tracked them down and that you're live on the BBC. Since doing that, I've not received any further calls - I’ve blocked a bunch of numbers. Usually, I’m not the sort to answer unknown callers, but these scammers seem to have a knack for using various numbers, mostly from Leeds, while making calls from overseas. It's a right laugh, really!

When they ask for card details, tell them you'll get it in a sec and hold them on the line for a while. It’s hilarious; they genuinely believe you’ve bitten the bait, but really, they’re just a bunch of uneducated simpletons trying to fleece hard-working folks. The poor souls probably earn meagre wages compared to the big-time fraudsters pulling the strings, yet for them, it’s a means of survival. Then play it up-say something like, “Alright, mate, I’m working with a fraud investigation unit and you’re live on the BBC right now. Tell me, how much do you actually pocket from preying on the vulnerable?” Let them know that they’ve been tracked down. It’s safe to say their superiors might get an unwelcome surprise soon! You’ll hardly receive another call after that! Honestly, it baffles me how people still fall for such scams; it’s like something out of a drama, isn’t it?
