Sounds like a classic cold call to me. These bods often use automated systems to ring us up, only connecting to a representative once they detect someone on the line. Personally, if I see a number I don't recognise, I tend to answer but keep my lips zipped. If it’s a legitimate caller, they'll usually jump in and say something. However, with those automatic diallers, the line tends to go dead if there's no human voice on the other end. Clever trick, really!
