I got caught out by a scam promising "30% off your O2 bill for life" not long ago. They pretended to transfer me to a manager, but it turned out to be another scammer sitting right next to the first one in some call centre over in Mumbai.
The fake manager asked me to give them a six-digit code that was sent by O2 via text, saying it was needed to verify my account. I was suspicious because the message from O2 clearly said never to share that code with anyone, even their own employees. But the scammer insisted, telling me, "It’s fine, just this once, Sir, and only to me."
I foolishly handed over the code, and later found out they’d placed an order for a pricey smartphone on my account, delivered to a PO box address they controlled. It was a nightmare sorting out the mess they left behind.
