I called them back just to be sure and it turns out he was genuine. Got the best deal for my renewal, so yeah, it’s definitely safe.

Got a call from someone claiming to be with British Gas saying our electricity was going to be disconnected soon because of an unpaid bill. They said they’d already sent a reminder. But we’re on direct debit and our contract isn’t up till halfway through 2021. Felt off to me.
