Got a ring from this number and a few others close to it, pretending to be British Gas. They said something about changes in how I top up and wanted to confirm my supply was alright. I rang British Gas myself using the number from their official site, and they told me those numbers aren't theirs at all. They advised me to block them, so I'd probably do that too if I were you.

Beware, folks, this is an utter con! I've had a barrage of calls from 0113 298 9000 on my mobile, purporting to be from British Gas, claiming I owed them money. Given that I just received a refund for my gas account, I found their claims rather dubious. When I attempted to ring the number back, I was met with a pre-recorded message saying the number was invalid. I then decided to contact British Gas directly via the 0800 number on my statement. The lovely advisor there confirmed that my account is totally up to date, with a zero balance, and also checked my previous address - nothing outstanding there either. Moreover, the British Gas agent kindly searched their internal directory for the mysterious number, and guess what? It doesn’t exist! I can't help but think this scam might be hinging on some redirected post that’s been intercepted from an old address. My Royal Mail redirection service recently finished, and I haven't received any final statement from British Gas, which raises more red flags. If you're receiving similar calls, be cautious! The scammers might have your personal details like your name, address, and perhaps even your Customer Reference Number, which makes them sound reliable. A good trick to catch them out is to ask them for your gas meter number - they likely won’t have a clue, and you can verify it against the sticker on your meter. I got a call from someone saying they were from British Gas debt collection, telling me my last payment hadn’t cleared and I had to pay up right away. They tried to pressure me by threatening bailiffs and other scary stuff. Don’t give these people any details! British Gas already know this number is being used for scams.

Got a ring just before one from someone asking about a British Gas account I’m apparently in charge of. They knew the address of the place I’m treasurer for but couldn’t seem to get my name right. Told them I’d already been in touch with British Gas earlier today, which confused them, and then they just hung up.

I said I’d wait, as I didn’t trust him at all. He agreed and hung up. Totally felt like a scammer trying to get info... and the bloke definitely wasn’t English!

Plus, my house doesn’t even have a gas connection and I’ve never been a British Gas customer, which just proves it’s a scam.

This number keeps calling me almost daily, claiming they're a business offering free boilers with no limits on age or income. When I don't pick up, they leave a recorded message on my voicemail. I'm really fed up with these calls. We're both pensioners, but since we don’t receive any benefits, we definitely don’t qualify for a free boiler - yet these people insist we do.
