Just got a single ring from a premium rate number, total scam alert.

It's the same thing over and over. This girl calls from a Tongs number and just keeps saying "hello, hello, can you hear me?" then "sorry I can't hear you," followed by some mumbling and "you’ll have to ring me again, I can't hear you," then back to "hello." She just keeps on like that for about 20 minutes until the call finally drops.

I've been getting repeated missed calls from this number on my mobile. Just today, I decided to return the call. When the line connected, I heard a voice saying, "Hello, hello! Apologies, I can't quite hear you. I'll call you back in a tick," and it sounded like they had either a Chinese or Thai accent. Quite bizarre, really!

If you’re not aware of how these scams operate, the people on the other end, usually abroad, set up premium rate lines that bill you as soon as you call. So when you ring the number, you end up with a fairly big fee, and it’s almost impossible to get it reversed.

So frustrating. I shared my phone number with an internet car seller not long ago, and I'm pretty sure this is the fallout, since I'm usually super cautious about security. Picked up one time and it was a woman saying she’d been expecting my call - definitely a recorded message. Ended the call straight away. Then about an hour later got another call from the same number (it showed up as coming from Tonga) which I ignored and have now blocked.
