Got a long text message sent to a group of 9 UK numbers, including mine, telling me to ‘claim my £300 Winter Fuel Payment’ by clicking a link. For starters, that payment doesn’t exist like that. The real government help goes by a different name and if you qualify, it’s automatically added through your energy provider. Seriously, don’t tap on that link!

The link in that message probably holds a lot of details that could help the police investigate. There are ways to flag suspicious scams. If you get texts like that, just take a screenshot or copy the message and send it to '[email protected]'. You can also forward the text to 7726, which is a handy number for reporting fraud. For extra advice, you could google '7726' or have a look at the phishing page on the National Cyber Security Centre’s site here: 'https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/collection/phishing-scams'.
