They’re working off old stock information and tossing around way overblown share prices like there’s a big buyout or merger going on. Totally sketchy if you ask me.

Someone called me talking about Centrica shares I used to have, but I sold them like nine years ago. They mentioned something about a scrip issue, then I just hung up. They tried ringing back but I didn’t answer, just cut them off again. Definitely felt like a scam.

Yesterday my missus got a call from 0017702838084. The person on the other end knew her name and address, and was asking about some shares she hasn't owned in ages. Seems like they were using some old info. She just ended the call straight away. Pretty obvious it was a scam.

Got a call from a woman with an accent, sounded like she was from East Asia, asking to talk to my late wife. She mentioned something about Norwich Union shares - which if you didn’t know, are now under Aviva - and said she worked for some 'Mergers and Acquisitions' firm. She even knew my landline number and old address, which was a bit unsettling.

This number has been ringing a lot lately, usually in the afternoon or early evening. Since we don’t recognise it, we’ve just let it ring off. When it went to voicemail, there wasn’t even a message left. My partner once picked up by accident but quickly put it down when a voice with an American accent started talking about share investments and stocks - she has none of those. Best to steer clear of this number and not bother answering.

Got a call from a woman with an Indian accent claiming to be Amanda, wanting to discuss my dad’s shares with him. Trouble is, my dad passed away over a decade ago. She kept pushing, asking who held the shares now. I ended up telling her that whoever she’s working for’s got a really outdated list. She didn’t stick around after that and hung up pretty sharpish. Sounds like one of those Aviva takeover scams to me.

This number +4417702838084 rang me a couple of times yesterday, but I chose not to answer since it looked like an INTERNATIONAL (USA) spam call. They never left a voicemail either, so I just left it alone. Personally, if they don’t leave a message, I don’t bother calling back. And if you have no contacts in the USA, then you’re better off just ignoring it like I did.

Got a call from someone saying they were Jonathan Blake, with a weird accent that sounded a bit like they were from over the pond. They brought up my name and mentioned Aviva shares (used to be Norwich Union), which made me suspicious straight away. The way they said ‘Norwich’ was off - they actually said the ‘w’, which you don't hear around here. Obviously a dodgy call from abroad. I asked them to send any details by email but didn’t give them my address, then ended the call. I’ve put the number on my block list on the landline now.

This was really upsetting and felt like harassment. They kept ringing me and wanted the name of my father in law who passed away about 15 years ago! Even after I told them to leave me alone, the calls didn’t stop. They said they were linked to Lloyds Bank at first, then changed it to Royal Bank of Scotland. Some bloke called, claiming he was working for a buyer interested in BT shares. He even knew my husband's name, where we live and our postcode! He was trying to buy shares at prices between £7 and £15 each. Asked me to send him an email so he could reply with paperwork that supposedly proved ownership. I told him no chance, I want stuff sent through the post instead. Then he just said I clearly wasn't interested and hung up on me. How on earth do these people get hold of so much personal info? Got a couple of calls today from someone asking for my missus. The bloke had a Dutch accent and was prattling on about Northern Rock shares and moving them over to Virgin Money. Thing is, Virgin Money is being taken over by Nationwide, so something doesn’t add up. Be super cautious about what info you give out. He claimed there’s a group keen to buy the shares for anything between £5 and £15. He also name-dropped the Northern Rock UK Shareholders Association before just hanging up on me. Total scam, no doubt!

Got a call from some bloke calling himself "Alan Sanders," sounded like he was from Asia or somewhere. He wanted to speak to my husband by his first name, claiming it was about his Aviva shares - which is bonkers since he hasn’t owned any for over 20 years! Funny thing is, I got calls from this same number like 3 years back, whining about investments she claimed he had but definitely didn’t!

I missed a call from this number and my voicemail just said I’d had a missed call, but there was no message left. Didn’t recognise the number at all. Before I did anything, I checked it on here. Glad I did, now I’ve gone ahead and blocked it.

Got a call from someone saying they wanted to buy our Centrica shares. I told them we’re not selling anything like that, mostly because we don’t even own such shares. Anyway, I’ve blocked the number now.

Got a call on my home phone from a bloke who seemed to know my name and mentioned that I’d once owned shares in BAA years ago. I told him that I don’t have any shares now since a Spanish firm bought the company ages back. Still, he kept going on about how I supposedly still had shares and claimed he worked for a firm wanting to purchase the airport group. It was a load of rubbish so I just hung up. I reckon they’ve dug up some outdated shareholder list and are hoping to get personal info like emails, mobiles, or maybe even bank details eventually. Seems like a dodgy scam to me.

Got a call from this number on my home phone earlier. The person on the other end actually knew my name and where I live. They claimed I owned shares in BA/IEG and said there was a buyer interested in taking over BA. I told the caller, who had a noticeable foreign accent, that I didn’t have any shares (just curious what he’d say next), but he kept insisting I did and even dangled a really good price in front of me. Eventually I just asked straight up what the scam was about! Left the call running while I sorted the dishwasher out.

Got a call around 6:45 in the evening, the person already knew my name and mentioned something about a merger wanting to buy my shares. He claimed to be calling from New York and was offering way more than they’re worth. I told him to send me the details by post and that I’d talk it over with my family. Then he went on to recite my full address, which freaked me out a bit. Didn’t give any info back though, so now I’m just waiting to see if I get anything in the post.

Last night, on the 20th of February, my 89-year-old mum got a call from this number. The woman on the other end was asking for her by name and talking about something to do with bonds. When mum asked where she was calling from, the woman just kept repeating mum’s name over and over again. Mum said she couldn’t make out what she was trying to say with all the repeating, so she ended up hanging up. After that, she blocked the number straight away.

Today, 20th Feb around 5.40, I got a call about BT shares. They asked if I had any, and I said yes but I wanted to hang on to them. They then said their client’s eager to buy as many as possible due to a takeover. I told them no chance I’d sell and just ended the call.

Like some folks mentioned, this was definitely a scammer fishing for details, claiming they were hired by a client to buy National Power Networks - yeah right! I told them to buzz off. They put the call on mute but didn’t hang up. It’s still going after 10 minutes. I’m just gonna leave it connected; maybe they’ll enjoy some good UK radio instead.

I got a call too, from a 770 number which is somewhere near Atlanta, I think in the outskirts. Thing is, they was using some kind of VOIP internet calling. No legit business wastes 10 whole minutes on the phone just to get around 100 shares in a big energy firm. They mentioned sending paperwork, but I'm pretty sure it’s just a trick to get personal info and rip you off. Stay careful folks!

On the evening of 7th February around 6.41pm, I got a call from someone saying I owned BAA shares. I told them I didn’t, but the person kept pushing. She asked for my email to send proof, but I said my computer wasn’t working right then and requested a letter instead. She seemed reluctant to post anything and after a bit, she just gave up.

Got a call off this number on 5th Feb 24. The bloke claimed he worked for a company trying to do a hostile takeover by snapping up Iberdrola shares. He followed up with an email asking for loads of personal details and wanted me to sign some kind of confidentiality agreement so I wouldn’t tell anyone. He sounded pretty convincing and nearly had me fooled, but after chatting with my family, we all thought it smelt like a scam.

I got a call from this number on 5th February 2024. The person on the line claimed his company was purchasing Iberdrola shares as part of a takeover bid against Iberdrola. They followed up with an email asking for loads of details and wanted me to sign a confidentiality agreement so I wouldn’t talk to anyone about it. Honestly, he was convincing and nearly had me fooled, but after chatting with my family, we all thought it was a definite scam. Oh, and I forgot to add, they gave the name of what seems like a legit firm based in New York - Lewis & Roberts Consulting Group.

Someone rang about some Northern Rock shares from my late father-in-law. They had a pretty detailed story going, but when I asked about the area code she gave from the US, she got a bit stuck and couldn’t explain why it didn’t match where she said she was. She mentioned she’d already talked to my mum-in-law, who’s 92, but luckily, she told her to get in touch with us instead.

Got a call from these folks claiming something about my shares in the old Northern Rock (which I actually have). They mentioned a takeover and asked if they could send me documents by email, but I said post would be alright. Seemed legit at first, though I wasn’t really expecting anything. After seeing what others have said though, I’ll probably block them now. They knew my name and address right, but maybe picked that up from the phone directory or something.
