So, it’s not some kind of scam or anything. I got a call from this number after I installed LinkedIn yesterday, and it turned out to be Microsoft checking if the number was actually mine and legit. They were just making sure it wasn’t someone else or a random reboot happening. Thought I’d share in case anyone else wondered about it.

Take a look at all the comments here. You won't receive a verification code unless you actually requested it, so just use some basic common sense. If you suspect a scam, make sure to report it to the police through 'Action Fraud' using their phishing report form on their website.

Got a call right in the middle of the night, didn’t pick up. They left a voicemail but it was in a language I couldn’t understand. Some folks say it’s from Microsoft. If that’s true, why wouldn’t they speak English first? It’s a global company, after all. Others claim it’s from British Telecom, but I’ve never even been to the UK and I live in Namibia (Southern Africa). People also mention it could be from Microsoft, Airbnb, Skype, email services, or telecom all at once - that’s just fishy. Bottom line, be careful, this smells like a scam call.

I got a legit call from Microsoft giving me a verification code to set up a new outlook email. If you’ve recently made changes to your account, a call like this is probably normal and you should be fine. But if you get a random call like this without expecting it, it might be a fake number pretending to be Microsoft. They actually let you choose whether you want a call or a text. From what I’ve gathered, this does seem to be a genuine number, though it’s been flagged as a scam on a US-based site. It appears to be used for confirming identity. When I signed into my Microsoft account, they requested the last four digits of the phone number registered to send a code via call or text. The caller even spoke with a British accent, so maybe it’s a service that supports different languages.

Its a scam! They ring you for a sec so you call em back to see who it was. When you call back, it’s a really expensive number. Just block it and dont bother calling them again.
