Got a call today from someone saying he was a BT engineer checking up on my internet. He said my broadband was overloaded and said he could fix it, but first he wanted to get into my PC remotely. Just a heads up, this bloke isn’t legit at all - he’s actually a scammer trying to steal your private data. Be careful!

It was odd, when I picked up this number, they just cut off without saying anything. Reading other posts, it seems like a common scam trying to trick you into giving remote access so they can steal your personal details. The 000 dialling code caught my eye since it’s only used by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda for international calls, yet the callers always sound Indian to me. That said, it probably means nothing because these con artists can spoof numbers from anywhere; one was even traced back to a hairdresser in Florida! I also rang 020 8833 3666 here in the UK, and the guy there said he gets loads of calls like this and is getting really annoyed by it all.

I just told him to stop messing about and said my hubby sorts all that stuff out. Asked him to give me a number to call back on, which was an 0800 one that sounded kinda like BT's. After he hung up, I did a 1471 and came across this info!

Just like loads of others have said, I got a call from a woman named Rita (she had an Indian accent) who said she was from BT. She said someone was trying to hack into my WiFi and do dodgy stuff online using it. She asked what gadgets were hooked up to my router and told me to turn on my PC so she could help me find some "important" info. I said my other half works in IT (he actually doesn’t) and that I’d have him check it out later. She just cut the call right there.

Just a warning, someone tried to get into my computer by making me launch a remote access tool using the Windows+R shortcut. A lady named Leesha or Lisa phoned, claiming our internet was compromised and she needed to help fix it remotely. I kept telling her everything was fine with our connection and even got the call cut off three times, but she kept calling back. The call finally stopped when I told her I don’t use Windows or Mac, I run Linux instead. PLEASE WATCH OUT, THIS IS DEFINITELY A SCAM!

Got a call from someone claiming to be with BT, asking for my computer’s ID number. Total scam, no doubt about it. I rang BT to check and they said it’s already been flagged with 'Action Fraud.' Honestly, I don’t get why BT can’t just block these nuisance calls for their users. Never hand over any info like that - it’s a nightmare waiting to happen if you do. Everyone should be pestering BT to put an end to these dodgy calls.

A woman from India called claiming she was from BT and asked if I was the primary account owner, to which I said yes. She then started talking about some illegal stuff happening with my BT broadband. I questioned her how I could be sure she wasn’t just some scammer trying the same trick, and she immediately hung up. Seems like BT’s security is pretty rubbish if details are leaking to outsiders like this. Got called twice by this number. First time, some bloke pretending to be from BT security told me someone was fiddling with my WiFi. Sounds dodgy if you ask me. Some bloke called himself Andrew and said he was from British Telecom. The call sounded like it was coming through some dodgy internet line, all crackly and compressed. He started asking about my internet speed and connection, but I told him to guess my postcode instead. I've been inundated with calls of late from someone claiming to be from BT, insisting that my internet has been compromised. They assert that a staggering 100-plus devices are linked to my connection - quite the stretch, considering I live in the sticks and barely have 20 people or gadgets in total! They come across as rather persuasive and tend to get a bit aggressive if you push back on their claims. Genuine calls from BT typically originate from an 0800 number, so I reckon this is nothing more than a dodgy scam. I'd advise hanging up immediately!

Got a call earlier where the person just cut me off straight away. About a month back, I received a similar call from a bloke with an Indian accent claiming to be Henry from BT. I told him I was recording the call for the GMP and pressed a button on my phone to create a beep sound - he just hung up abruptly. That’s a dodgy call if I ever heard one. I reported it to BT for them to look into but haven’t heard anything back yet. Had some internet issues around six weeks ago and had to call India myself. Sounds fishy to me. BT really need to sort this out.

Someone from OWL Watch got a call from a person claiming to be from their service provider, saying their account had been compromised. The caller asked several personal questions about their home before requesting the password to get into their computer. When the person said they felt uneasy and wanted to talk it over with family first, the caller tried to persuade them to give access anyway and promised to ring back. When the follow-up call came, the person refused to let them in.

I've been getting calls from this number pretty much all day long. I always let it go to my voicemail to see who it is first, then they just end the call. After a while, these types of calls tend to stop once they realise there's no one picking up. Using voicemail like this works well for me to avoid chatting with annoying callers.
