Networks and Groups > Positive Practise Group

This group, which is chaired by Tony Russell, oversaw the first Positive Practice Awards in 2003 to help develop, share, review and reward achievements of frontline staff, service users and carers in practice.

What is positive practice?

The group's definition of positive practice is broad and is about identifying and promoting activities that have a positive impact on people's lives, that enhance and support the work of mental health services at an individual, team and organisational level.

You can find examples of Positive Practice in the brochure for the 2003 awards, for which 400 entries were received. Download Brochure

Update on Progress

Positive Practice Awards 2004
Members of the group have consulted widely on this year's awards. While the group wants to demonstrate consistency in the general areas the awards cover, they also wanted to vary the focus of the awards each year, in order to reach the breadth and depth of people and organisations supporting mental health in practice.

The following ten categories will be covered in 2004:

  1. Lifetime Achievement
  2. User Involvement and Leadership
  3. Making a Difference
  4. Young People's Mental Health
  5. Older People's Mental Health
  6. Learning Disabilities and Mental Health
  7. Substance Misuse
  8. Social Inclusion
  9. Diversity
  10. Effective Mental Health Commissioning

The closing date for applications is 12 March 2004. Click here to apply online or download a printable application form.

Applications will be judged by a panel consisting of both Postivie Practice group members and experts in the chosen fields. Site visits to shortlisted projects/services will take place in April, with the awards ceremony in June.

Award winners will receive £2000 toward further service developments and support from their local development centre, in collaboration with the Positive Practice group, to:

  • Help recognise the project or service's achievement;
  • Identify any additional support or contact the project or service may wish to tap into to help them in their future development, and/or to profile their work at a manageable level (eg writing for publication, speaking at events, linking with other interested services).
